Your child's first visit to the dentist

A good first experience sets the tone for a lifetime of healthy teeth. The aim of the first visit is not treatment: it is for your child to meet the team, sit in the chair and learn that the dentist is a friendly place.

When should my child first go?

Around their first birthday, or when their first tooth appears, is a good time. Early visits are short and easy, and they let the dentist spot problems and give you advice on cleaning, feeding and habits like dummies and thumb sucking.

What happens at the visit?

For young children the dentist might simply count their teeth, look gently at their gums and show how to brush. Older children may have a gentle clean and a check. We explain everything in simple words, show each tool before using it, and never force anything.

How you can help

Talk about the visit in a relaxed, positive way. Avoid words like hurt, needle or drill, even to reassure, because children pick up on them. Read a story about a visit to the dentist, and let your child know it is just a chance to count teeth and have them shiny.

Make it routine

Regular visits make the dentist feel ordinary. A check every six months, or as often as your dentist advises, means any small problem is found early and treated simply.

Everyday habits that protect little teeth

Brush twice a day with a small smear of fluoride toothpaste for toddlers and a pea-sized amount for older children, with an adult helping until they are around eight. Limit sugary drinks and snacks between meals, and offer water instead.

If your child is anxious

Tell us beforehand. We can plan a slower first visit, let your child sit on your lap, and take as many breaks as they need. You are very welcome to stay with them.

To book a family visit, send us a request and mention your child's age so we can plan the right appointment.
